ROMAN GOMEZ, '85
Roman Gomez, while at the 1984 CA State track meet, was a double winner, completing the tough 1600+3200, for only the second time in meet history (Done by Rich Kimball in 74). He won the 3200 first in 8:58.91, with Matt Guisto (Foot Locker Nat'l X-C Champ) 3rd in 9:05.20. Approximately 80 minutes later, Gomez won the 1600 in 4:09.05. Both times flashing a devastating kick.
Also, Gomez won the 440 in a duel meet by .1, with a 51.9, while in lane 1! Oh yeah, Gomez was a junior.
Gomez repeated his double in 1985 4:15.93/ 9:03.05 in cold & windy conditions. He toyed with both fields before pulling away to victory, with an impressive 55.7 last lap in the 1600! With Mark Mastilar (Jesuit) 2nd in 4:16.72. / In the 3200, Gomez sped a 59.0 last lap: - 2nd was Calvin Gaziano (Castro Valley) in 9:03.16 - 3rd Eric Mastalir (Jesuit) SJ 9:03.31.

Congrats go to Coach Roman Gomez who was selected to the CIF All-Century Team for Cross Country and Track and Field! Now a teacher and coach at Belmont, his performances in high school during the mid 1980's are truly legendary!
